opossums

I found these three baby opossums clinging to their dead mother in the road this morning. Most of their siblings were not so lucky and were crushed on the road. I warmed them up cleaned them off (they were covered in blood) and took them to a wildlife rehabilitator since I am not currently doing rehabilitation. This time of year you should check dead opossums for babies, they often survive the crash.

How sad for them & their mother, what gorgeous little babies they are, you are both wise & kind to rescue them, you have given them a second chance, I certainly hope they all survive.

I hope they will, they were so cute. I think they have a good chance.

It's so sad that we are stuck in this car dependency thing and the toll it takes on the little creatures who have to dodge and weave around us as we all make our way in the world. It's so ironic that I put up with such a long drive to work so I can live in the middle of plants and animals only to see so many on my way into town each day killed by the cars that make that lifestyle possible.

True, I also have a long commute for work and I see many crushed animals. It is sad how we just assume ourselves to be more important then the other creatures that share the planet with us. I have had someone kill a turtle by running it over right as I was trying to rescue it.
So I take a moment to check to make sure there are no babies on the opossums, sometimes I stop to make sure the animal is indeed dead. Sometimes I stop to pull them out of the road and save other scavengers from getting it. It helps to have hand wipes in the car and towels. (a subject I am obviously passionate on!)
